Introduction to the Intelligence and Information Course - Faculty of Engineering, Ryukyu University / Graduate School of Engineering, Department of Information Engineering
Mission and Objectives
The Intelligence and Information Course aims to cultivate professionals who possess specialized knowledge, practical skills, design capabilities, analytical abilities, broad knowledge, and ethical values, based on logical thinking and natural science. Students will deeply understand the impact and mission of intelligence and information technology on society, humans, and the environment. Through cutting-edge technologies in intelligence, information, and systems, graduates will be equipped to actively engage on an international level and contribute autonomously in various fields.
Features of the Curriculum
Starting from the academic year 2017, the Department of Information Engineering transitioned to the Intelligence and Information Course within the Faculty of Engineering. While maintaining the traditional focus on practical computer skills from the first year, new lectures, exercises, and experiments have been introduced to learn advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, network security, and system development. Furthermore, interdisciplinary engineering fusion subjects have been introduced to acquire broad knowledge. In pursuit of fostering professionals capable of international activities, English language courses are available throughout the four years.
Teaching Licenses
Students of the Intelligence and Information Course have the opportunity to obtain a Secondary School Teacher License (Information) for high schools. In this case, students need to acquire the required credits in subjects related to education and teaching. Additionally, those who continue to the graduate school (master’s program) and have obtained a Secondary School Teacher License (Information) or acquired the necessary credits for the license can obtain a specialized license.
Specializations
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
In recent years, artificial intelligence has achieved remarkable results, such as in self-driving cars and AI-powered games like chess and Go, rivaling human performance. Learning about AI technology may provide insights into the significant societal changes that may occur in the near future. The Intelligence and Information Course offers specialized education in various AI-related technologies.
Intelligent Robotics
Intelligent robots act as intermediaries between the cyber world and the real world. They use information from the physical environment to make decisions and take actions in the real world. Examples of intelligent robots, such as Siri and Pepper, are already active in various forms, regardless of appearance. In the Intelligence and Information Course, students can create their own intelligent robots that may become companions of the future.
IoT - Internet of Things and Security
In the modern world, not only smartphones and PCs but also various everyday objects, home appliances, automobiles, and more are connected to the internet. While this connectivity brings new value, it also emphasizes the importance of security measures to protect against malicious attacks. The Intelligence and Information Course covers network technologies and provides knowledge of information security.
Wireless Communication
In the IoT world, almost all objects require wireless communication technology. Various communication technologies, such as LTE, WiMAX, satellite communication, and recently underwater wireless communication, are used depending on the required performance. The Intelligence and Information Course explores the possibilities of wireless communication technology.
Data Science
Many real-world phenomena, such as self-driving cars, AI-powered games, personalized recommendations in online shopping, and genetic testing through oral mucosa, are based on knowledge derived from massive amounts of data (big data). Merely collecting data is not enough; it must be correctly analyzed to reveal hidden knowledge and relationships. This research field is known as data science. The Intelligence and Information Course offers subjects to develop data science foundations and train data scientists.
